Tank testing
West Fuel Systems Limited specialises in the diagnostic testing of fuel storage tanks and pipework systems.
Fuel storage tanks and associated pipework integrity testing is a vital part of any responsible organisation’s planned site maintenance programme. Historically, tank and line testing have been used to meet regulatory requirements or because of a problem on-site, this approach is changing with the vast majority of West Fuel Systems integrity testing now being conducted by organisations as a preventative measure to highlight potential problems before they arise and have an impact on their business.
Fuel storage tanks
Our high-quality, secure and robust mild-steel bunded fuel storage tanks are manufactured in capacities up to 150,000 litres in a variety of styles and as single or multi-compartment fuel storage tanks. We offer a wide range of standard tanks, as well as specialist, fabricated bunded-fuel storage tanks to individual customer designs.
The rectangular, horizontal, integrally bunded, above-ground bunded fuel storage tanks are manufactured to the highest standards and conform generally to BS799-5: 2010 (Type J) (oil-burning equipment) and to recommendations made in ‘Oil Storage Regulations for businesses’ (Environment Agency and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, England and Wales, 2018) and GPP2: Above Ground Oil Storage Tanks (Scotland and Northern Ireland). The fuel storage tank is a totally enclosed bunded unit. The inner tank provides for fuel storage whilst the outer tank forms a totally enclosed bund with a capacity of 110% of the inner tank contents. BS799 -5: 2010 states the material types, thickness and stiffening locations.
HDPE pipe work
HDPE Petrol Pipe Systems are a state of the art, total solution for the handling of liquid fuels in underground and above ground dual contained fuel pipework systems suitable for use with petrol, diesel, kerosene, bio-fuels and AdBlue. With features that address environmental, health and safety, life span and economical concerns.
The petrol pipework product range is expanding and developing continuously to adapt and conform to ever more stringent demands of the market. By using state-of-the-art technology, the pipework offers highly competitive, long-term solutions with designs that have been developed to eliminate all leakage and electrostatic hazards.
HDPE double contained electrofusion pipework is suitable for all known liquid fuels, including petrol, diesel, kerosene, ethanol, methanol in different grades, mixtures and AdBlue.
Secondary contained pipes have been developed to provide extra environmental safety. By applying an outer secondary pipe over the inner primary pipe (pipe in the pipe), an interstitial space is created. A class 1 leak detection system can be used to continuously monitor the interstitial space for leaks offering full environmental protection.
As a result of careful development work and stringent control of the manufacturing processes, all petrol pipework systems come with a specific manufacturer’s warranty (quoted on request) from the date of dispatch.
Fuel tank decommissioning
The correct decommissioning and removal of oil or fuel storage tanks is an important factor as the incorrect decommissioning and removal methods could lead to a serious accident. Therefore, adopting the appropriate precautionary measures is essential. With the health and safety at work act stipulating that a sufficient risk assessment must be completed to identify any potential hazards and to ascertain the right precautionary measures are in place, you can rest assured you will be in good hands when you make West Fuel Systems your choice of contractor.
Fuel Tank & Pipework Tightness Testing

Avoid possible fines
A fuel storage tank or fuel pipework failure can lead to environmental damage resulting in the contamination of ground & watercourses, in addition to environmental damage the neglect of fuel storage systems & auxiliaries may jeopardise insurance policies!
The Environment Agency states that it is the site operator’s responsibility to ensure that fuel storage systems are leak-free and fit for purpose.
Did you know that the age of your fuel facility determines the frequency at which you are required to carry out fuel tank integrity testing? For underground petroleum tanks 30 years old you are required to carry out tank integrity testing every 2 years!
Mitigate the risk of fuel storage systems leaking and avoid environment agency fines
The use of additives in today’s fuels has proven to accelerate fuel storage tank corrosion and the breakdown of certain pipe sealants leading to the uncertainty of fuel storage tank and pipework life expectancy.
As a result, many organisations have implemented regular tank testing and inspection programmes as a means of assuring the current condition and life expectancy of their fuel storage tank and having the ability to assess the condition of their fuel storage facility.
Symptoms such as phase separation, contamination, frequent filter blockages, monitoring well contamination or free water in a fuel storage tank are often a result of a simple integrity defect.
There is no point in treating the symptoms without addressing the root cause
A fuel tank and pipework integrity test by West Fuel Systems will quickly and accurately identify any potential problem or defect with your fuel storage facility.
Upon completion of the fuel tank & pipework testing, West Fuel Systems will provide a report detailing any defects found and copies of the relevant documentation. This will include test certificates, In the unfortunate event that equipment failure has been identified, West Fuel Systems can offer you options for any remedial works required.
